Relaxation techniques

Relaxation techniques are an essential part of stress management. If you're an overachiever, you may put relaxation low on your priority list. Don't shortchange yourself. Everyone needs to relax and recharge. Relaxation is invaluable for maintaining your health and well-being, and repairing the toll that stress takes on your mind and body. Almost everyone can benefit from learning relaxation techniques. Relaxation techniques can help to slow your breathing and to focus your attention on the here and now. Common relaxation techniques include meditation, tai chi and yoga. But there are more-active ways of achieving relaxation. For example, walking outdoors or participating in a sports activity can be relaxing and help reduce stress. It doesn't matter which relaxation technique you choose. What matters is that you select a technique that works for you and that you practice achieving relaxation regularly.

The Only 5 Habits Standing Between You & A Healthy Gut

Image
Photo: Stocksy In 2013 my stomach was at its all-time worst. Without going overboard with TMI, I was bloated all the time and couldn't go to the bathroom—you get the idea. On top of that, I lacked energy, my skin was horrible, and the list goes on. I was self-conscious, didn't want to leave the house most days because I felt so sick, and just knew something had to change. I was working out regularly at that point and not eating as badly as I had in the past, so I was at a loss in terms of what could be going on. I had stumbled upon information about inflammation, foods that trigger it, the gut, and how they all work together, so rather than heading to my doctor, I decided to eliminate some foods and see how I felt. I cut out gluten and dairy and fairly ...

Why You Should Make Hormonal Balance Part Of Your Self-Care Practice

Image
by Natalie Kringoudis November 3, 2016 5:45 AM Save   SHARES 37 Photo: Twenty20/@annanos96 I'm a traditional Chinese Medicine doctor, so I know firsthand that balancing hormones is no easy feat. There are cycles to consider and the intricate dance they ride each month. And of course, all along the way there are bumps in the road, or forks in the road, which is part of the deal in modern-day womanhood. It seems that we have two choices: deciding between the pill to "fix" the problem or riding it out and, through trial and error, look for what is really going on. Either way, it's not always an easy path and there ...

I Drank Only Water For 10 Days, Here's What Happened

Image
Photo: Twenty20/@nkempinski Enjoying my first mouthful of wine after drinking only water for 10 days, I tasted subtle flavors I'd never noticed, from every individual grape that went into making it. As I stood in a girlfriend's kitchen, with a glass of rose, I realized my tastebuds had been completely reset. Water no longer tasted metallic, and wine tasted like ambrosia. What is a "beverage cleanse"? I spent 10 days drinking nothing but plain water from the tap or filtered water from a jug. No tea, no coffee, no alcohol, soda, or even sparkling water. Not even a slice of lemon. I ate normally and carried a small bag of chocolate-covered coffee beans for emergencies, because feeling weary is one thing, but falling asleep and ending up on th...

7 Steps To A Healthier Relationship With Your Body

As a psychiatrist working with people who have food and weight-related concerns, I often hear about the struggle around weight, eating and body image. No one is immune. However, the struggle of people who are overweight and obese carries the additional burden of stigma and discrimination. The stigma of obesity and the related discrimination against overweight people is very real. Research has shown that obese people experience discrimination in employment, education, health care settings and personal relationships. It seems that the stigma and discrimination faced by these individuals may be causing more problems than the actual excess weight does . Many people with weight concerns also have a critical attitude towards themselves. Harsh self criticism, however, usually leads to yo-yo dieting rather than lasting weight loss. I've seen many patients preoccupied with weight go through cycles of weight loss and gain, food addiction, body dissatisfaction, distracti...
